Competitive Events Overview

At the State Business Leadership Conference, FBLA members may compete in one performance event and one written test. Or, they may compete in two written tests. (Please note: Skill site production events are considered written tests)

New events, marked (NEW), will only be available at the State and National levels for 2008.

Individual Written Tests

These are all offered at the regional, state and national levels. Winners of these events at the regional level may choose to compete in this event at the State Business Leadership Conference. Individual written tests include the following:

  • Accounting I
  • Business Calculations
  • Business Communication
  • Business Law
  • Business Math*
  • Business Procedures
  • Computer Problem Solving (NEW)
  • Cyber Security
  • Economics
  • FBLA Principles and Procedures*
  • Health Care Administration
  • Hospitality Management
  • Introduction to Business*
  • Introduction to Business Communication*
  • Introduction to Parliamentary Procedures*
  • Introduction to Technology Concepts*
  • Networking Concepts
  • Personal Finance (NEW)
  • Sports Management
  • Technology Concepts

* These events can be taken only by 9th or 10th grade members

Speaking Events 

These events are offered at the state and national levels. Impromptu, Job Interview, Public Speaking I, and Public Speaking II are also offered at the regional level. The winners at the regional level may choose to compete in this event at the State Business Leadership Conference. They include the following:

  • Business Literacy (requires written objective test and role-play) (NEW)
  • Client Service (NEW)
  • Future Business Leader (requires written objective test and interview)
  • Help Desk (requires written objective test and role-play) (NEW)
  • Impromptu Speaking
  • Job Interview
  • Public Speaking I*
  • Public Speaking II

* these events can be taken only by 9th or 10th grade members

Other Individual Events

These events require only specific components as listed. Offered at the State and National levels only.

  • Electronic Career Portfolio, requires presenting an electronic porfolio
  • Desktop Application Programming (NEW), requires a pre-judged program and a presentation
  • Internet Application Programming (NEW), requires a pre-judged program and a presentation

Recognition Events

  • Administrator of the Year
  • Advisor of the Year
  • Alumni of the Year
  • Businessperson of the Year

Role Play Events

  • Banking and Financial Systems
  • Entrepreneurship
  • Marketing
  • Network Design

Production Events

These events have two components:

  1. A site production test proctored and completed at the local level then submitted for scoring and
  2. A written test.

Both scores are complied to determine the winners. Only four of these events are offered on the regional level this year they include: Computer Applications; Desktop Publishing; and Word Processing I & II. The rest will be offered at the State and National levels. These events include the following:

  • Accounting II
  • Computer Applications
  • Database Design & Applications
  • Desktop Publishing (a team of two)
  • Spreadsheet Applications
  • Word Processing I*
  • Word Processing II

Team Events 

Three of these team events are offered at the regional level they include: Entrepreneurship, Network Design, and Parliamentary Procedure. At the regional level only the written test is given. The new events will only be offered at the State and National level this year. A written test taken prior to the conferences will determine the top ten teams that will compete at the State and National levels. The top ten teams will perform the speaking component in front of judges. These events include:

  • Global Business (team of 2 or 3)
  • Network Design (team of 2 or 3)
  • Management Decision Making (team of 2 or 3)
  • Management Information Systems (team of 2 or 3) (NEW)
  • Parliamentary Procedure (team or 4 or 5)

The following team events are performed at the State Business Leadership Conference. No written test is associated and members do not have to qualify at the regional level to participate in these events. Members are encouraged to research and be prepared to speak on the provided topics. Refer to the FBLA Chapter Management Handbook for further details on these events. These events include:

  • Emerging Business Issues ( team of 2 or 3)
  • Business Ethics (team of 2 or 3)

The following events require a project to be completed and turned in for judging prior to the State Business Leadership Conference. All teams who submit a project will be invited to perform the performance element of the event in front of the judges at the State Business Leadership Conference. These events include:

  • Business Presentation (team of 1 to 3) (REVISED – Formerly Multimedia Presentation)
  • Business Financial Plan (team of 2 or 3)
  • Business Plan (team of 1-3)
  • Computer Game & Simulation Programming (team of 1-3)
  • Digital Design & Production (team of 1-3)
  • Digital Video Production (team of 1-3)
  • E-business (team of 1-3)
  • Website Design (team of 1 to 3)

Chapter Events

The following events are chapter projects that can qualify for the National Conference.

They have 3 components to them

  1. Create a written project and submit it for judging prior to the State Business Leadership Conference.
  2. Chapter teams will perform in a preliminary round at the State Business Leadership Conference.
  3. The top ten teams from the preliminary round will be invited to perform in the finals.

These events are considered by Oregon FBLA to be classified as a "Performance event" If a member chooses to compete in these projects, they are not eligible to compete in any other performance event. These events include:

  • American Enterprise Project (team of 1-3)
  • Chapter of the Year
  • Community Service Project (team of 1-3)
  • Partnership with Business (team of 1-3)
  • Local Chapter Annual Business Report (Written Project only no performance with this project)

Chapter Events – Oregon Only Competitions

The following Chapter Events are competitions done on a state level only. Criteria for these events can be found in the Oregon competitive Events Handbook that is currently posted on the Oregon FBLA website. Winners will not go on to a national level in these events. All members are encouraged to work on theses projects. Projects should be submitted under the Chapter name. They include:

  • Chapter Newsletter
  • Chapter Publicity
  • Chapter Website
  • Chapter Scrapbook
  • Digital Scrapbook
  • Gold Seal Chapter Award
  • Government Promotion Program
  • March of Dimes Financial Form
  • March of Dimes Project
  • Oregon FBLA Foundation Project
  • Oregon FBLA Foundation Scholarship
  • Oregon State University Lucille Borigio Scholarship
